CryoGram -- my notion of Cryptogram

Post by WhizCat »

Here's another rewrite, only bigger and fancier than it's predecessors. Of course. We've come a long ways since my original of this genre. It was done in assembly language on a machine that had a golf ball printer rather than a monitor. And the program and its puzzles were stored in punched paper tape. And that was a long time ago.

My last one of this ilk is still around and still running. It too was written in assembly language, but for a color-but-text-mode-only DOS dog. Oddly enough, my wife still plays this one occasionally on our POS machine at the store (which is an old PC/XT).

This cryptograms program includes 199 puzzles and as many frills as I could think of that would adapt to the fun world of Just BASIC. I've received scant feedback on my last contribution, but I'm hoping at least a few will enjoy this one. My granddaughter gave it two-thumbs-up, by the way.

Just learned that this program works correctly only when screen is set for 640x480. (Which is where I keep mine all the time, BTW.)

Am working on a solution for problem when run in 800x600 and higher modes.

Another gotcha that must be learned the hard way, apparently.

Found my dumb mistake. Gotta watch the fine print better, right?

I had used 0 for X and Y for the upper left corner coordinates. Changed X and Y to equal 1 and all's well now. Naturally.

Good thing my Christmas wrapping was finished before I downloaded this game. This game is quite addictive! Thanks, Tom. 18 puzzles solved and 181 to go! Woohoo!

Glad you liked it Janet.

You noticed the MORE.TXT, no doubt. At a point I may add some more puzzles to the little library. Or you can, maybe, and share with the rest of us?
